Has anyone heard of the Major League of Gaming and would you consider it a sport? Why or Why not?

Hey, its a heck of a lot more interesting to watch other so called sports like Poker or Darts. Or Golf for that matter. I've watched a bit of it from time to time, but I really wish that it was a true gaming league and not a travelling Halo tournament. The Omegathon is an example of what they should be doing.

Sport? No, not in my book. When I call something a sport, I factor in competitiveness (which MLG does have) and also physical exertion (which MLG doesn't have).
For the record, although ESPN shows poker and darts, I don't consider those to be sports as well. Those contain the competitiveness, but lack the physical exertion. I consider those to be games.

Doesn't a sport also have to have skill and luck in it also? If you believe that then MLG is considered a sport.

Hmm. So, then, would you call NASCAR racing a sport? I'm still trying to make up my mind about that.
Competitive cheerleading is considered a sport in the state of Michigan, but I don't consider that a sport either.

Yes, I belive that's part of what's needed in order for something to be considered a sport, but not the only thing. In my book, if you don't physically exert yourself, it cannot be considered to be a sport. Hmm. So, then, would you call NASCAR racing a sport? I'm still trying to make up my mind about that.

Both of those are sports in my book. In both, the participants physically exert themselves to extremes. In NASCAR it's the physical exertion to withstand the high G-forces and temperatures, in cheerleading it's the acrobatic moves.

I wouldn't really say that counts as physical exertion.

And golf?
You ever carry around a heavy bag of clubs for 18 holes on a hot, sunny afternoon? Even when using a cart, it can still be tiring. Going out there and swinging a club 60 to 70 times over 18 holes, or 80 to 100 for us not-as-good golfers, can wear you out. Keeping a proper swing can tense your body up, and doing it for 3 hours straight is a good anaerobic workout.

Well, back to the crux of the matter. I have made myself a Free Agent on the MLG circuit but I doubt I'll get picked up due to having no previous experience.

MLG (especially televised MLG) often depresses me. The guys get REALLY worked up when like, their frags are insufficient. Watching one of these matches often reminds me of standing in line at EB Games on a bad day, where the people in front of me are talking about games (and using a lot of acronyms) while the casual gamers in the store look at them like they're from another planet. I mean, I'm a nerd, but still...I guess it makes me sad when people take themselves really seriously and don't notice when other people think they're being ridiculous. But this is probably all my own general lack of confidence. After all, elite MLGers can rake in (tens of) thousands of dollars a year, so I guess it's good for them.

The worst sport is the one in which people compete to have their definition of "sport" accepted.
