So after being minus'd myself lately and seeing some people's absurdly negative +/- count on this board, I've decided to see what this whole thing is all about. If you feel like explaining your reasoning behind your minus-ing ways, here's the place to do it. I'm not trying to put anyone on the spot: I just find it curious that there is so much negativity in such a small community.

The only times I've done it are when I disagree with a point somebody makes, or if a post made by somebody just really rubs me the wrong way.

I hardly ever give karma... unless it's something awesome, and even less negatives.
The only time I've done it is like what potthole said...

If someone says something really stupid or annoying (because I am superior to most other people and can judge them like that)

+1 Nah, really... I rarely give karma, but when I do, it's mostly positive. If it is negative, it is usually because he/she is disrespectful or over the top.

Normally, I don't do it when someone has a different opinion. It's a free country, after all (or countries). Normally, I only give out negative karma when someone is annoying or they say something stupid or they say something that offends me. I guess, looking at my numbers, that people find me somewhat annoying, but I don't care too much about karma. I don't really pay attention to it at all. I think the only reason I get negative karma is because I try to be as witty as some people here (i.e. Teatime, AoF, etc.) only I tend to fail at it.

I usually only give a ( - ) when someone is being a jerk, has absolutely horrendous grammar or spelling, or (in a serious manner) disagrees with an opinion because of absolutely absurd reasoning. If someone expresses an opinion that is largely against mine, then I won't - karma then, but probably + karma them. That is, if they are actually explaining their point of view. If they just simply say it, then I'll probably negative karma them. To be blunt, it's purely on impulse. I think the only reason I get negative karma is because I try to be as witty as some people here (i.e. Teatime, AoF, etc.) only I tend to fail at it.
I cannot recall a single time I have given you a negative karma.

Well, thanks! I think I've given you and Teatime the most positive karma. As far as I can recall, I haven't given you negative karma. I do know the member I've given the most negative karma to was Quenners.

I remember when I used to just randomly post things in the CGN... maybe that's how I got -220. Oh well. I got up past that with +s, so I'm good.

Yeah, mostly people being jerks, or in extreme cases of annoyance. In serious discussions, I don't think I've ever given a - to people against me, but generally give +s if they make me look at things from a new angle, or make me have to think hard in order to come up with a good rebuttal.
There was, however, one instance of a member whom I disliked so much I would actually log on every day and give a - even if that member had not posted anything. I will refrain from saying whom it was, though. Aheh.

About the only time when I gave negative karma to somebody who wasn't being rude, annoying, or just all in all being really, really stupid, was Quenners. I mainly did that because I got a kick out of how P.O'ed he would get about it.

Remember when Quenners became a "changed man"? He was all like, "I'm not annoying! I've stopped being annoying!" and then other people were just like, "You are so still annoying," and he was just like, "OMG man +1 lolololol! See, I'm nice!" and then another guy would say, "No, you're stupid," and Quenners would say, "Hey, you're right! +1!" ... Yeah. He got plenty of -1s from everyone. Anyway, I only -1 when someone is rude or annoying, or if they say something like "I'm gonna get -'d for this post" because if I didn't that'd be ironic.

Here's something I've always wondered. If you knew who had given you a -1, would you -1 them back? On the flipside of that, if you knew who had given you a +1, would you +1 them back?

Would it be like some forums where you must provide a reason as well or not? If there was a reason then I would -1 them back if the reason was stupid or made no sense, but I wouldn't -1 someone just because they -1'd me.

No, just if you knew.
I forgot something else that I do -1 people for. When they do something to death. I won't mention examples, but when a joke is done at first, it's cool, but when it's done to death, or by multiple people, that's when I start handing out the negatives. Sometimes you gotta just stop making a certain joke and move on. It's dead. Let it rest in peace.
