We're starting a persuasive paper in my Adv English 2 class, and they let us choose the topic. I choose the violent video game controversy thing. This rant here of course won't be in the paper since it has to be formal and maybe due to the light cussings I'd use if this forum didn't have a word filter.

First I'll start by giving the definition of the word "game". According to the Merriam-Webster games are an "activity engaged in for diversion or amusement". Amusement. Not for training yourself to kill the masses. The uses for games are purely for enjoyment and only those thickies that use them for other stupid purposes need to have someone backhand them for being such an idiot.

Another thing we have to protect those impressionable thickies from games are the ESRB rating system. The games clearly state that such games are for teenagers or mature players. Even looking at the back will tell you what's in it. "Blood and gore" "comic violence" "Sexual themes" "Use of alcohol" etc. Parents should check the game's rating and things it includes, and if they don't like what's in it, they can refuse to buy it for their child. Parents need to be more responsible.

Other people like Jack Thompson, need to shut their mouth. Without giving any evidence at all, he jumps to the conclusion that just because they play a "violent" video game that it taught the kid how to kill. Yeah... pressing buttons is reeeeal close to actually pulling a trigger. He even passed a message to the father of a victim of a case that was supposed linked to video games. He was obsessed with GTA, but that doesn't mean anything. Here's the message "The attorneys had better tell the jury about the violent video game that trained this kid [and] showed him how to kill our daughter, JoLynn. If they don't, I will."

Unfortunately, video games like Manhunt and Condemned have kind of made the debate go away from my favor. Gruesomely killing people in the best ways possible as well as diagrams of the best way to get the most carnage. Trying to say that games like this are harmless is like saying that Abe Lincoln wasn't tall. It has been banned in some countries, and I can see why, though I'll never play something like that.

I'll need to get some more research later, but for now that's all I got.

I actually, and I'm totally serious on this too, would be really interested to read your paper. I would seriously love to read a copy of it.

For my persuasive speech, I also gave it about video games, although mine was just why people should buy a Wii, because we were supposed to persuade people to do something with our speech.

Oh man, I already did an essay and persuasive speech on that exact topic this year.

I'm gonna eventually be looking up some things on the internet. Only need 3 sources. Hopefully I can make a 1-2 page essay over the whole thing. I don't have Word on my compy, the free trial ran out. So the only thing I have to do it on is Wordpad, so I gotta edit it at school anyways.

I'm using the default text color, because I'm dead serious about this.

I hate console fanboys.

An acquaintance of mine who shall not be named frequently insults my choice in game consoles and tries to persuade me to buy the PS3, which in his self-righteous rants, may as well be the second coming of Jesus Christ.

I still own both my PS1 and PS2. They are both fine consoles, and the latter may be the greatest of all time as far as game selection and hardware quality goes.
The PS3 Fanboy, or "Jack", as I will refer to him for the rest of this rant, says that I should already have the PS3 on the basis of "loyalty to Sony".

what?
I don't work for Sony. They've never paid my electricity bills so I could continue playing PS2. I owe them NOTHING.
When I was looking for a next-gen console, I spent extensive time playing with 360, PS3, and Wii before deciding which one I would buy. The game library and awesome online service led me to 360, and later Brawl led me to Wii. I have no reason or desire at the moment to buy a PS3. The game library (in my opinion, the most important part of a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE) has literally no appeal to me.

So, Jack tries to coax me into Sony fanboyism by attacking my consoles. His rants have included:
-360 has a limited game selection, and fewer games are released for it than other consoles ("only for Halo" conversations come up a lot)
-Wii is riding a wave of popularity that blinds consumers from realizing that there's no good games
-360's online is a paid subscription, Wii's is nonexistent, and PS3's is 100% free
-METAL GEAR SOLID 4 LULZ

First of all, attacking other things to prove your point is a poor debate strategy. Secondly:
-360 has more games that appeal to me. I HATE Halo. I mostly play rhythm games, and even if I did have a PS3, I can guarantee that I'd go for the 360 version simply for Achievements and the vastly superior Xbox Live service.
-You have to pay for Xbox Live because it's more dedicated, well-maintained, and easier to use than PS3's. I honestly don't mind paying $50 for 366 days such a great service. (And I love arcade games. <_<)
-The game selection thing is a mix between a flat-out lie and pure opinion. 360 has the most games coming out overall, so there's the lie part. And at least two or three games come out a month that personally interest ME, so there's the opinion part.
-I will admit, I love Metal Gear. If I have a few hundred dollars lying around all day, I will pick up a PS3 to play it...even though few future games interest me on the console.

Fanboyism to consoles is ridiculous if you haven't owned (or even played) all of the consoles. Like I said, I'd be up for buying a PS3 one day if the game selection catches my eye more. It's human nature to favor things, but you honestly can't judge something if you haven't tried it out. Jack doesn't own and hasn't even played a 360 or Wii game ever.
Credibility = 0

After all, it's just a game system.
Have fun writing essay-length posts on message boards defending the consoles...the rest of us will be doing fun things like having a life. kthnxbye  Smiley

I'd be willing to pay the absurd ticket price just to see Mastodon and Five Finger Death Punch, but the tour doesn't come to Ohio, of course.

It seems like all the really BIG concerts stay the heck away from Ohio, and the concerts that aren't as huge (but still cool) don't come to Columbus, which is really the only town I have the ability/motivation to take the trip to.

Mastodon is amazing live. Seriously.  I got to see them right after Blood Mountain came out, blew my mind.

Five Finger Death Punch is okay. I actually got to see their "first show ever" front-row at this small music festival in no-name-ville Missouri back in 2006, right before Motograter's "last show ever." Which was interesting if you know anything about Ivan.

Totally agree with you. I love my PS2. It may be one of the greatest consoles out there. I got my Wii first simply because it had Twilight Princess, and I knew that Galaxy, Brawl, and Mario Kart would be coming out for it and I wanted to play those games. 360 now has enough games for me to warrant getting it. I haven't played any of the MGS games before but I might just be interested in trying them out and playing them. Right now, Resistance: Fall of Man and Final Fantasy XIII are the only games I'm really interested in, although MGS4 may get on that list. Ratchet and Clank may be another one as well. Sony needs to have a good selection of exclusive games for me to get it, because I've decided that third party games will be either Wii or 360 games, as the 360 to me has taken the place of the PS2 in this current gen, even though I have a Wii first.

WARNING: RELIGIOUS POST ALERT

This isn't really a rant... but I'd still like to share it with you, and in the first post I did mention you could have positive posts.

I am so glad for God. Without God, I'd probably be failing all my classes. Without God, I wouldn't even exist. God is man's best friend and his worst enemy. He makes the decisions, and I am grateful.

For example, the other day, I was talking to him (I don't feel like explaining it... tape-leg knows, but I don't think anyone else here does) and I told him, "I am sorry, God, but I have not found a good source for Social Studies. If I come to school tomorrow, I'll be kicked out of the class!" God responded, saying that he would love to help, but I've already been sick so much this year that if he had me stay home the next day, it'd just make things worse. I asked him if there was anything else he could do. He said he'd think of something.

The next day, I come to school. Social Studies teacher = not there. We had a sub, a sub who does not have the power to boot people out of classes for not having their work done (my social studies teacher is awesome but kind of... not awesome). I was ecstatic.

Until I found out that our English projects were due today. I had almost finished mine and was planning to finish last night, but my sister was yelling at me for some reason or another. I couldn't find a quiet enough environment to finish the voice recording. Today, I walk into English class, with a kind-of finished project. Guess what just happened next.

English projects are due Tuesday. I have Monday and Friday to finish (because Saturday and Sunday I'll be at Sasquatch) and that means that I can relax more.

I don't want to hear anyone say that God does not care about something as trivial as middle school grades - but if I failed my classes, then I might not get into a good college, because I might not get into good high school classes. And I'd like to go to College.

Our God is an awesome God, that's for sure, and despite the fact that I'd rather not force my religion onto all of you... I'd like to  remind all of you to appreciate the God we have and not wish for any more.

[/religion]

I'll tell you one thing that cooks my meatballs.

I went into a restaurant and ordered some fish, and I said to the waitress, "Hey, there's something wrong with my herring!" and she said, "Well, go to an ear doctor"

SO I DID! And I came back, and the herring tasted just as awful as before. Although I have to tell you, the doctor's fish was pretty good. Although the ambiance was a little better in the restaurant, I have to say, they had a beautiful view. You could see all the boats out in the harbor, but that didn't change the fact that the food was awful!

Review Rant time: Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess

The LoZ series has been going on for a long time, and there are about 10 or so in the whole series. My first Zelda title back in the 90s on the N64 was OoT, which most would say is the best ever. And I was in agreement until I started playing TP. I sure I'll get hate mail or negative karmas over this, but I'm saying it anyways. I believe the Twilight Princess is the best one out of them all. The PM button is that little button that looks like a note and the negative karma button is the "Burninate" button.

Now that that's over, it's review time.

I don't have a Wii, so I could only get the Gamecube version, and by that I mean rent it for 5 days. The freakin' game was no where to be found anywhere. Cheesed me off. Other than that, it was a pretty fun game.

With the new power of being able to turn into a wolf, and then eventually being able to turn into one any time, that gave it a big plus. Midna was awesome, sometimes taking to you like you were a horse. And Link's angry little growls that he gave to her every time she appeared on his back made it even more funny and awesome.

One moment that stood out in my mind is the time where you're jousting with this one pig thing on a large boar thing to save a little girl. After going back and forth, waving my sword wildly every time he passed by, I finally got him down. The part ended with a slow motion cutscene of Epona rearing back on her back legs and Link holding his sword in the air. This was possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen so far in this game and it filled me with much glee.

Later I found out that that was a little boy. LITTLE BOY?! He reminds me of Slippy... although this boy looked very girlly while Slippy just sounds girlly.

Anyways, another thing I liked was the first temple. The forest temple, I'm guessing since that's always the first one in most games. The main thing that I found cool was the fact that it had a lot of monkeys. The monkeys followed me and helped me go across small gaps I couldn't get past on my own. To get to the end, I had to get all the monkeys to make a big monkey chain which I used to swing across. The fact of monkeys even being there was a plus, so that was my favorite temple so far.

Now for the things I didn't like. One of the things I hated was the water temple. I ALWAYS hate that temple. Like always, it involved some kind of use of water to do things and getting a blue tunic which you used to breath. At least this time, Link had some kind of mask thingy which I'm guessing he breathed through, unlike the others which just changed his tunic from green to blue. That temple took me hours, trying to figure out where I hadn't been and what would happen if I do certain things. Eventually, I figured out the whole water thing and got to the boss place. Still cheesed me off.

One of the other things I hated is that they reused some things from previous games. Like always, the final battle (or at least part of it) had to do with knocking back their projectiles. That was fine in the 2D ones, but this time it's just getting old. You didn't get to use the light arrows this time, like in Wind Waker, Zelda used them. I don't see why she just fires those things at him instead of one at a time. But, oh well.

Another thing I could nitpick about would be the get the evil bugs thing to unlock the area from the twilight. Kinda didn't make since. This evil guy had put twilight all over, and entrusted the keeping to bugs. How do evil bugs have light? How does that work out? And why are there gold bugs that you give to a little girl? What kind of little girl likes bugs? A creepy one I'm guessing... but she does give you a bigger wallet.

I'm being mean. Through all it's flaws, this game was fun. I loved it. Yes. Fun. Something we never have anymore nowadays with games. I'm sure there is a lot more than that, but the game is so long that it took me five days to beat it. I was never one to complete all the crazy "Get 500 things to get this cool item you'll never use" quests. Oh well.

I hate when people try to force their religious beliefs (or lack thereof) on me. It's great that you're Jewish/Christian/Buddhist/Atheist...whatever.
But please, don't try to force me to convert.

edit:
I also hate when I get to a movie theater early, while it's still empty...and someone sits right next to me (or right behind me).
I went to see Baby Mama last weekend by myself, and the two people who come in...sit right next to me and directly behind me.

It's just awkward and stupid...there's plenty of seats, people.  Tongue

edit again:
I hate when people say "their old stuff is better" in relation to music.
Shut up.
Judge every album based on how good it is, not how it stacks up to the previous one.
A great example of this is Radiohead's "In Rainbows" being hated on because it's "not as good" as OK Computer, Kid A, or The Bends. Just because you were listening to "Paranoid Android" the first time you saw your future wife doesn't make "Reckoner" any worse.

Oh, and I also hate this mission in GTAIV called "Catch The Wave". Phil Bell is a weakling.  Angry
I hate rushing through my second playthrough of the game because I'm rushing to get the "Beat The Game In 30 Hours" Achievement. I like to take my time and enjoy games, especially one that is loaded with as much content as GTAIV. Running from mission to mission for a stupid OPTIONAL prize = not fun. But I'm doing it, because I'm a sucker.

That's what you get for seeing Baby Mama I guess.

No I haven't seen the movie, so I'm just making a guess, I may be wrong though, in which case j/k.
