(resurrecting back to page one a bit) but...I think that Shinon is better than Rolf.  Rolf gets VERY close to Shinon, but if they're both max leveled, Shinon is just a little better.  They are admittedly pretty interchangeable though.  Shinon is not quite so squishy so I don't mind the loss in dodge, and he hits like a slightly more massive train.  That having been said, I'd drop them BOTH in a second for Rath from the GBA.  (mobility ftw)

Sorry for not responding to this sooner, but wow. You are literally the last person on the forum I would have expected to be a FE fan.

Almost all characters in the series depends completely on growth. Some characters have better growth potential (higher % that stats will increase upon a level gain) than others, usually the weaker the character at the start the higher the potential. And thus, when two characters of the same class hit level 20 promoted, the one with the higher potential should have better stats. Like Oswin > Wallace, Franz > Seth, and Nino >>>> Erk.

But Path of Radiance was a little... strange. It never quite followed the patterns established by the rest of the series. Like Titania, who appears to be your average XP-hog-overpowered-knight-from-the-start-of-the-game-that-sucks-later character, is one of the better knights in the game. And Mist, who starts off extremely low and you'd think she'd be amazing later on, really is only of any use in the Black Knight battle. And then there is Rolf and Shinon. Rolf takes nearly the entire game to catch up to Shinon, but the thing is that the former never greatly surpasses the latter, as would be expected. Rolf does have better growth potential, but Shinon isn't half bad himself. And while Rolf SHOULD be better than Shinon, from what I've read is that they pretty much end up completely even, with Rolf being faster, but Shinon being slightly more defensive. Most people just take Shinon for the reasons you stated, but my Rolf was odd, in that he grew far more than he should have (somehow) and was one of my best units. Thus, a controversial choice.

Really, I should not have wrote that long, but I tend to get that way sometimes.

And also, I think the original FE (well, original in NA) had way better archers than any of the other three games. Rath was great and all, but man. Rebecca was absolutely outstanding. Sure, she couldn't attack short ranged and she couldn't move as far, but she had an extremely high dodge and, even with just a reasonable bow, could two shot any enemy in the game except for a few bosses.
