JACK IS BACK! 1-11-09 on FOX

Incredible Hulk
« on: June 14, 2008, 05:58:51 pm »

Just got back from seeing Incredible Hulk. Post your thoughts on the movie and, if you've seen Hulk, compare the two.

Overall, pretty good. If we're talking Marvel Movies, I don't think it was as good as Iron Man, although having Tony Stark appear at the end did help, and if we're talking summer movies, I don't think it was as good as Iron Man and Caspian. I'd say it's just below Indiana Jones. The thing is, they did it exactly right. From a comic book fan, they got Hulk perfect. Hulk is not about Hulk. It's about Bruce Banner and his struggle with being the Hulk and his attempts to stop being the Hulk. Peter Parker may sometimes think having his spider powers is a curse, and Batman may sometimes think he is cursed for always having to put on the cowl and mask, but Bruce Banner IS cursed...with something he has no control over. The movie was kinda depressing. Never before have I appreciated comic relief, which this movie really didn't have. Even Batman Begins had some comic relief in it, but Incredible Hulk really didn't.

Edward Norton did a great job as Bruce Banner. He nailed the character of Banner, just as Robert Downey Jr. did for Tony Stark. I felt as though I was really watching Bruce Banner.

Liv Tyler...wow, it was weird to see Liv Tyler and hear her with her normal voice. I'm so used to her Arwen voice with her voice dropped an octave. There were a few times where she sounded like Arwen. She actually was perhaps the best comic book girlfriend ever. She's no Mary-Jane Watson or Lois Lane. It felt as though the two were equal, not her following after him like Kirsten Dunst and Kate Bosworth. I liked her character a lot.

Abomination was a good choice for a first villain. I like the changes they made. In the comics he's sort of a lizard like guy, so I liked how they changed that.

I really liked Downey's cameo as Tony Stark. It felt like it had been a few months since the events of Iron Man (which in real time it has been) and since Nick Fury visited Stark, Stark's been working with Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. The question is though, are they looking to recruit the Hulk, or stop him? Hulk in the comics sometimes works with the Avengers, and sometimes is hunted by them, so that will be interesting to see. I love how Banner's experiments were directly related to the Super-Soldier formula from the 40s during WWII, which of course is when Captain America was first created. This almost seems like the Ultimate Marvel Universe. In the Ultimate Marvel universe, pretty much all the superheroes are created directly or indirectly from the Super-Soldier formula and attempts to create it again. Peter Parker was bitten by a spider infused with the Oz drug, Banner was working on the formula when he became the Hulk, and Reed Richards was part of a think tank created to help re-engineer the formula and his work there with a teleporter led to the creation of the FF and Dr. Doom. It seems like at least with the Avengers it's more Ultimate Marvel, which is a smart choice, as I believe Ultimate Marvel outsells normal 616 Marvel.

Overall, good movie, quite depressing, not as good as Iron Man but perfect and true to the character. I give Incredible Hulk a 9.1/10 or a 4...out of 5.

Wait, Edward Norton is Bruce Banner?
No one told me that.

In fact, I didn't even see any promotion for the movie until the day before its release. I'm going to go see this soon, Norton is a brilliant actor.
