Topic: Which iPod should I get? Ver. 3.11 (Read 673 times)

I'm getting a Macbook Pro soon for University in the fall (that, and to escape my horrible experiences as of late with Windows) and Apple is having a promotion so that anyone who is buying a Macbook (all three varieties) or a Mac for school purposes gets a free iPod Nano or Touch, both 8 Gig versions. I initially though that the Touch was the way to go, but have done a little research and am not quite so sure anymore. From what I can see: iPod Touch -Pros: Touch interface better for general use, bigger screen, internet access, all the basic iPod features, Bigger, iPhone Games, Linux homebrew -Cons: Screen is exposed (I tend to leave my keys in the same pocket as my MP3 player), video quality isn't very good, not as sturdy, Volume controls are software based, Linux homebrew voids warranty iPod Nano -Pros: Click wheel better for music listening, longer battery life, better video quality, better protected, iPod Games. -Cons: Smaller, Smaller screen, no extra features. Also, does anyone know if either of these don't work with the 360 to play music while listening to music? I'm almost certain Nanos can, but I dunno about Touches. And can Touches play games that are available for other iPods, say, Song Summoner? I would appreciate any other information you think would be helpful. EDIT: Changed the poll.

No. If the size is the same, I would say it mainly depends one the battery and how often you'd use the web browser.

Well, I actually use my Wii's internet browser a lot, so I imagine I would be using the Touch's just as much (not all the time, but maybe 1-5 times a week, which is a heck of a lot more than most people). I even use my cell phone's from time to time, but that is slow as heck. But I will do it if I don't have access to something better.
Oh, that's the other thing. How well does the Touch work with Flash/Java based sites? As the extent of my Wii viewing is usually Gamefaqs and Youtube. And having wireless youtube would be pretty sweet, even if it slowly turning into a pile of crap.

Youtube works fine.
In fact, isn't there a button on the main Touch screen for Youtube?
And on a semi-related note, my parent's call their iPod Touches "iTouches" and it bothers me to no end.

In my humble opinion the 80 GB Classic is the only good value.

My original plan was going to save money to get a Classic, but then this offer came up. So my Classic plans are on hold.

Well, I can't speak on the Touch as I've never seen one, but I can on the nanos.
Looking at your pros and cons list, I'd say the fact that the screen is exposed and you tend to keep your keys in the same pocket as your MP3 player is a big point. One thing that really irritates me is a scratched screen, especially for videos.
Also, I'm guessing that the Touch's web browser is sort of like a phone's. Meaning the Touch will display web pages using the cell phone version. I'm not sure if the forum has a cell phone version (I'm guessing not). I kinda doubt GameFAQs has one either. I know YouTube does, and other pages like FoxNews.com, MSN.com, and eBay have cell phone webpages. So that's something to consider.
One thing you might want to think about. You could always sell what you get and use the money from that to go towards getting a classic. So, from that perspective, the Touch is worth more. Currently according to Apple.com, the 8 GB Touch is $299, and the 8 GB nano is $199. Selling a like new Touch, looking at eBay right now, you could probably get at least $200 on eBay and probably more, whereas with the nano you'd get only a little over $100. So, basically, an extra $100 if you sell it. And, thing is, selling it would go a long ways towards getting an 80 GB classic, which are currently (again, according to Apple.com), $249. This is all U.S., of course, but Canada I imagine would be pretty similar.
So, actually, I'd say go with the Touch, sell it on eBay, and put the money towards that classic. That's my opinion.

Go with this. 80 GB of video and music for $250 is the best deal you can get for an iPod...Touch is really only good for "Look how cool I am!" value.

I'm pretty sure it'll display pages just like a pc. I was messing around on my cousin's and it was able to display some pretty obscure sites.

Yeah, it's just the normal internet, not the watered-down kind. Yeah, + karma for the selling free things idea. Even being as much as a penny pincher as I am, I probably wouldn't have thought of that.
