Which graphics card should I get?
« on: July 12, 2008, 01:16:36 pm »

I'm sure there some computer wizzes here.

I'm a computer gamer as I guess I'd call myself. And sometimes I get lag from games and some video features don't work for this crappy video card that I have now. One of the reasons I have narrowed it down to is that I need a new graphics card. That's always what I get when I try to play many games.

I've searched newegg.com for graphics cards only to get a bunch of crazy deals and jargon...

I don't want to spend over $300 or so, I might go over if it's good. I want something that's good for most games out there (Not for as high as Crysis, oh god no).

Could anyone help me out?

Well, it all depends. We need to know what type of slot you have on your motherboard (PCI-e or AGP) and what size PSU you have. For $300 you can get a heck of a video card. One that will max out Crysis plus some. That's one common misconception, you really don't need to spend thousands on a gaming PC. You can build one for about $800.

Also, what are the other specs of your computer, out of curiosity's sake?

Let's see...

Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
Memory: 1014 RAM
Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family

I think it's AGP for the slot, and for PSU, you got me on that one...

Well, your processor is going to bottleneck pretty much any mainstream gaming video card.

As for the PSU, really the only way to tell is if you pop open the side of your case and read what the label says for wattage.

For video cards, this is pretty much the best you can get:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161226

A nice thing is that it comes with the adapter for the power. As long as you have two 4-pin molex connectors and your power supply is powerful enough to run it, you can use it.

Eh, computers really aren't that hard. Once you learn the basics, it's all the same. Some good websites are:
