AP and SAT Scores
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:07:06 pm »

Mine just came in.  Since there may not be a whole lot of people on this forum in a whole lot of AP classes this year, go ahead and post scores of years past too, if you feel so inclined.  If you did take an AP class this year then I think you know what to do!

U.S. History - 5
Music Theory - 4

Grin  I honestly thought I got a 2 on Music because it was tedious and I barely tried, thinking I would take it again next year after another year of music theory class.  Since I'm taking the class anyways, I may just try for the 5 next year.

Edit:  Since I made a new thread for this, why not include SATs?  Those came out recently.  Post yours, past or present.
Math - 710
Reading - 700
Writing - 660

AP Scores? SATs?

These things you speak of, I know not of.

Well you live in the wrong country :p

No but really, AP is like sort-of-college-level high school classes with standardized tests, on which a score of 3 or higher (out of 5) earns you college credit.  The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is something everyone takes and it's one factor in how colleges gauge the abilities of applicants.  Each section is out 800.

Canadians feel free to post their canadaptidude test scores.

I know that we can take University credit classes, just not in High Schools as small as mine.

But there is no standardized testing in Canada. Or at least, where I live there isn't. Education is looked after by the province, so the handling of things like exams and testing are done differently province to province. Case in point: My cousin in Alberta has wrote Final exams since he was in Grade 6, but only has to write for major classes like Math, Physics, English, etc. I, however, have been able to have a high enough average that I didn't have to write until Grade 11, where I took a final in every class (Yes, even Art and Phys. Ed. I wrote a final). But our Finals mark and are mark throughout the year are the only thing that affects our final grade.

Now, I lied. There is some standardization testing done which, from what I've heard, are quite like an SAT in its format. But these have no reflection on the marks of the individual who wrote it, but on the schooling system itself. They're used to figure out where students have difficulty and what needs to be taught better. At least that's what I've been told. Maybe they are just controlling us, trying to make us think a certain way. Who knows.

But yeah, only percentile marks here. Even in Univeristy, its done on a percentile basis.

The U.S. has state-issued standardized testing which is usually for accreditation and school evaluation purposes too.  They are unique to each state.  But the SAT was devised to create a national standard for colleges and universities to judge students by.

Ah, I see. Well, that makes sense. I always thought we were writing the same sort of tests, just for different reasons.

So, SATs determine whether someone can get into a College/Universities (if not in full, at least partially). Hmmmm...

I took the ACT, not the SAT. ACT, which doesn't stand for anything, is the other major standardized test for prospective college students. The one we take depends on where we are and what schools we want to apply to. The ACT is more popular in the Midwest and Southern parts of the country, whereas along the East and West Coasts the SAT is more popular, although the ACT is gaining on the East Coast. Typically, those that do poorly on the SAT do better on the ACT and vice versa. Colleges for the most part will accept SAT and ACT scores, although some schools are only accepting ACT scores because of noted criticisms of the SAT (which btw no longer stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, but is now a pseudo-acronym like ACT). Whereas the SAT goes up to 2400, the ACT only goes up to 36. Typically, you have to get at least a 30 to get any scholarship money. I got a 29 on the ACT and so I ended up getting a little money my freshman year.

Yeah, it does seem like the relevance of the SAT is declining, but very few people around here take the ACT.  I don't even know anything about that test.

this man's got it down. I got a 34 on my ACT, so my University gives me a couple grand in cash at the beginning of each semester, on top of paying for books and tuition. It's rad.

I took the ACT in seventh grade because of some program I can't remember and got a 23 (mostly guessing). And my parents are going to make me start taking it for real next year. And I'll have to take the SAT at some point. And my school doesn't have AP classes. D=

You crazy kids...with your three number SAT scores.  I had a 780 verbal and a 720 math as a senior.  I had a 1380 (I forget the breakdown) in 7th grade when I took it for Hopkins.  I can't believe that I still remember that.

Got a 4 on AP US History back in high school.  People were pretty mad at me when they heard the score, and then heard I didn't study for the exam at all.

I cannot tell a lie; I partly got my info from Wikipedia. Part of it I knew myself, but I didn't know which tests were more popular in which areas of the country or that students that do poorly on one tend to do well on the other.

I've been trying to remember my ACT score.  I think I got a 27, maybe?  Crap, that was like seven years ago...

I can't believe I haven't bragged about this yet, but I got a 36 on the ACT. Suck it. I overslept and missed the SAT, so I'll have to take that one again in the fall.

Also the only AP test I took was Calc AB, which I got a 5 on. I'd be pretty confident about getting into college if my GPA wasn't so mediocre (3.3 or something).
