The official Pokemon thread
« on: November 03, 2009, 04:47:35 pm »

We have a lot of threads in the archives about certain kinds of Pokemon, but we don't have one generally about those ~500 cuddly powerhouses who, collectively, you are compelled to catch.

Want to show us your Pokemans? Want to talk about battle tactics? Want help breeding your Bidoof, trading your Togepi, or poking your Pikachu*? This is the thread for it.

So HeartGold and SoulSilver is coming out in a few months, guys. Who's going to get one or both? :D?

*warning: poking Pikachus is not recommended.

I'm getting HeartGold, just like how I got Gold years ago.

It looks amazing. They really improved Kanto.

I've always been a generation I purist, but it's quite possible I will get HG or SS. I -loved- FR and LG.

My final teams in each of those games were:

Fire Red:
Rhydon
Dugtrio
Gengar
Electrode
Vaporeon
Victreebell

Leaf Green:
Tangela
Hitmonchan
Sandslash
Ninetails
Zapdos
Raichu

Feels good, man.

I had gotten Crystal back in the day. I kinda wish they'd do a re-release of Crystal, but I'll take HeartGold.

I'm going to get HeartGold. The only reason I'd want SoulSilver would be for Skarmory, because Skarmory is awesome. :D

I recently replayed the original Gold in preparation for the new games. The team I used to beat Red was as follows:

Tyranitar
Machoke
Ampharos
Typhlosion
Seaking
Jynx

Good times! :D!

Totally talking about gen I though.

Gen II was all about Scizor and Umbreon.

It should be noted that I haven't actually played the pokemon games for quite some time. And, up until Silver, I was very much of the mindset "Use the legendaries and win!"

So, I've always been a very heavy Gen I purist, mostly playing Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen. I played Gold or Silver once through back in middle school, but that's it. I'm considering getting back into the game with Diamond. But I am still hesitant. Any thoughts on the matter?

I enjoy Diamond greatly. Although I really have to say before anybody else puts their thoughts in: you might as well go straight to platinum. There's really nothing you're missing and everything you're gaining. EVERYTHING. ARRRRRGGGAGHRGH

yeah.

Anyway, pokemon goes out of its way to make the game user-friendly– even though there's like 500 pokemon almost there's actually only like 120 or so you'll find in the course of the game, with a bunch of the rest showing up afterward. I guess I can't really assuage your fears unless I actually know why you're hesitant, so I'll just say:

Pokemon is a well-made, if easy, RPG whose game mechanics are all fun, and which has a variety of mini-games that are fun and help you in the main quest.

Good mini games and good game mechanics is pretty much what I look for so yay.

That pretty much sums it up, actually, and does help ease my hesitance! I really like having a strong grasp on the original 150 pokemon; i have a general idea which types are good against which, where to pick up what dudes, when to use them, etc. I'm just worried that I'll suddenly be thrust in bizarre mutated creatures, a mocking facade of our own reality, and that if I saw one more new pokemon with a name I can't pronounce on the first highway in the game I would fly off the handle. Like, do some sort of acrobatic pirouette off the handle and win like a medal.

But I guess that's also what bulbapedia is for!

Guess so!

Also, I kind of think that not knowing where to get which pokemon or where to use them is a wonky complaint–you don' t know what to do in any new game!
