HELP! New laptop.
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:34:17 pm »

Alright, my 5 year old laptop finally gave out on me and I'm looking to upgrade. I want something that will handle games decently but doesn't cost a fortune. (A man can dream right?) Also I'll be using it for school so I'd rather it didn't weigh like 20 lbs. Now I'm fairly knowledgeable when it comes to computers but I thought I'd get some other perspectives. Here are 2 of the ones I'm considering right now, but I'm totally open to suggestions:

ASUS K53SV-A1
$849.99 CAD / $877.569 USD

Pros:
Cheaper
Smaller and therefore lighter
2 year warranty and 1 year accidental damage coverage warranty

Cons:
Not as powerful in every aspect (aside from like DVD drive I guess)
Smaller HDD (though its still quite large)
Integrated graphics (though they are still pretty good)

Acer Aspire AS7745G-9445
$1,099.99 CAD / $1,135.79 USD

Pros:
More powerful
Dedicated graphics card
9 cell battery

Cons:
Right at the top of my price limit
Larger therefore heavier (but a larger hd screen is nice)
Only 1 year warranty (my laptops generally last pretty long anyway)
Acer isn't the best of companies in my experience

So hopefully someone can give me their $0.02 CAD / $0.0206557 USD

I am not the guy to go for this, but I have learned these few lessons over my life:

A) Go for the big hard drive. It won't be big 2 years from now. You should be looking at 512 as the lowest, 1 TB as average.

B)Same thing with memory.

C)Never go integrated graphics.

Far from all complete advice, but that's all I have.

Can't really help but a friend of mine is in the same kind of situation so I'll be monitoring this. Let me know if you make any big plays.

Well the Acer is $200 off all weekend. That made that decision easy.

HELP pt.2

What stuff should I install on here? Whenever I'm setting up a computer I can never think of what to install. I'm going to use this page as a checklist:

Chrome
Anti-virus
Windows Live Messenger (I GUESS I could get AIM)
Steam

Visual Studio
SQL management
Adobe Master Collection CS5
Office of some kind (microsoft or open)
Skype
Audacity
VLC

Wireshark
Packet Tracer
VirtualBox

If you getting Microsoft Office for free or cheap it's about a million times friendlier than open office.

I enjoy OpenOffice, but Microsoft Office is better.

Here is a checklist of what I have to always remember to reinstall:

VLC
Audacity
Skype
Photoshop/GIMP
Update Java/Flash/Adobe/etc.
Cave Story
Firefox (always good to have two, non-internet explorer browsers)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I plan on getting microsoft office from work, but if I can't then I'll just go open office. I've used both before and I don't really MIND open office.

I enjoy OpenOffice, but Microsoft Office is better.

Here is a checklist of what I have to always remember to reinstall:

VLC - added
Audacity- added
Skype - installer was on my desktop on startup
Photoshop/GIMP - getting with master collection cs5
Update Java/Flash/Adobe/etc. - good call
Cave Story - still haven't played this game  Shocked
Firefox (always good to have two, non-internet explorer browsers) - I'm using netscape navigator as my 2nd non IE browser

Added some of them to the list, thanks
