Okay, enough about story. I'm thinking my next Top 5 will be about a classic Top 5 topic on the boards: Best Soundtracks of this past generation.

This is far more enticing to me, ya big Debbie Downers.

5. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

Yes, my top two are mostly 'remixes' of older songs. Is that cheating?

Oh man, MAD respect for the Grizzly Hills music. Probably the best track in WoW.

Also, Cave Story is kiiinnnda cheating, but whatevs. Like I said at the start of this thread, when a generation begins and ends is largely subjective.

I'm going to go out and say that Medal of Honor and Walking Dead: Survival Instinct would probably have made everyone's list if anyone here other than you played them.

I kinda agree with Apollo Justice, especially since it was part of one of the stronger cases in the series. It felt like they did a bad job in selling you the reason on Phoenix Wright's apparent fall from grace, so I wasn't really all too impacted by the twist. Also, when you actually play through the flashback scenario, it is probably the most underwhelming part of that game. Yet, I don't know. Worst moment in 8 years of video games? That's a little too much hate.

I know, I'm the guy who's more likely to try a bad game. But hey, I've disagreed on games that are generally thought of as terrible. Moreso movies but some video games too.

I think for me Apollo Justice fits that bill because I am a big fan of that series. So for me, it was a greater disappointment. The idea of best story moments (and I guess its flipside of worst) is just for us personally. It's not supposed to be objective at all (at least, that's how I'm approaching it).

And I loved L.A. Noire for the Los Angeles of yesterday, the detail in people's faces (which allowed for a fun spot-the-famous-person mini-game), and the fun I had investiating the story. But I will say I didn't care much for Cole Phelps. I just don't have respect for someone who cheats on his wife.

I'll do licensed first, because that's easier.

The conditions for this list are marrying a visual/gameplay moment with a licensed/pre-existing song.

5. Saints Row: The Third
Scene: Driving with Pierce
Song: What I Got
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/TFXxXcF1ra8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/TFXxXcF1ra8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

4. BioShock
Scene: Entering the Lighthouse
Song: La Mer
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/-Xu4ebwcBFY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/-Xu4ebwcBFY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

3. Bayonetta
Scene: Graveyard Intro
Song: Fly Me to the Moon - Climax Mix
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/oQ2QgcRrWlc?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/oQ2QgcRrWlc?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3</a>

2. Red Dead Redemption
Scene: Entering Mexico
Song: Far Away

1.The Beatles: Rock Band
Scene: The End
Song: The End

***********************************
TOP 5 MOMENTS OF LICENSED MUSIC-GAME INTEGRATION THIS GENERATION
***********************************

5. Hotline Miami
Song: Moon - Hydrogen
Scene: Chapter 3
Why: Chapter 3 is when the game "begins", when the game breaks you. When you stop being shocked and grossed out by the shocking and gross things happening around you and you just accept it. You accept that horrible things are happening and you know, deep down, that this is wrong. Your stomach begins to hurt, you feel sick, but all of the flashing lights, smooth gameplay, and blood soaked mayhem is just constantly lighting up all these pleasure centres in the mind. And there, in the background, is one of the catchiest and invigorating songs ever used in a video game looping ad infinitum. You can't look away. You can't stop listening. You can't stop playing. But when your body quits out on you and you finally feel like shutting the game off is not an option but a necessity, you're going to be leaving with a headache and probably puke a bit.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/PmLzRqU48Yc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/PmLzRqU48Yc</a>

4. Bioshock Infinite
Song:  Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
Scene: When things start going down...
Why: I wasn't as enamored with Columbia as most people were, but it's weird workings with time travel and music reinterpretation sure did.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/UsQuTCycrwI?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/UsQuTCycrwI?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

3. Robot Unicorn Attack
Song: Erasure - Always
Scene: Always
Why: I really don't know if this game was born out of someone listening to this song way too many times, or if, through sheer serendipity, the developers of Robot Unicorn Attack managed to find the absolute perfect song. Cause they are a match made in heaven.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/6ISVNC2IB1o?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/6ISVNC2IB1o?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

********

Okay, so my original list for this exclusively had tracks from my top two picks, but where's the fun in that? So I squashed them down to the top 2 picks and chose my three favourite scenes in each game. Also, no "why"'s, because the answers is always just going to be "because it's badass."

********

2. Brütal Legend
Song: Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
Scene: Eddie arrives at the Temple of Ormagöden (Tutorial)

<a href="http://swf.tubechop.com/tubechop.swf?vurl=LSbgeXTDHLQ&amp;start=648&amp;end=743&amp;cid=1646933" target="_blank">http://swf.tubechop.com/tubechop.swf?vurl=LSbgeXTDHLQ&amp;start=648&amp;end=743&amp;cid=1646933</a>

Song: Def Leppard - Rock of Ages
Scene: "You start a revolution, Lars" (RTS Tutorial)

<a href="http://swf.tubechop.com/tubechop.swf?vurl=OalSCswoc7c&amp;start=1160&amp;end=1354&amp;cid=1646947" target="_blank">http://swf.tubechop.com/tubechop.swf?vurl=OalSCswoc7c&amp;start=1160&amp;end=1354&amp;cid=1646947</a>

Song: Brocas Helm - Cry of the Banshee
Scene: Lair of the Metal Queen

<a href="http://swf.tubechop.com/tubechop.swf?vurl=7Wcn4zC_K8c&amp;start=853&amp;end=1242&amp;cid=1646981" target="_blank">http://swf.tubechop.com/tubechop.swf?vurl=7Wcn4zC_K8c&amp;start=853&amp;end=1242&amp;cid=1646981</a>

1. Saints Row The Third
Song: Kanye West - Power
Scene: Party Time

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/OxDZv_1NcMs" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/OxDZv_1NcMs</a>

Song: Bonnie Tyler - I Need a Hero
Scene: THREE WAY - BIG ENDING SPOILERS

Song: [Sublime -] What I Got
Scene: Driving with Pierce
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/TFXxXcF1ra8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/TFXxXcF1ra8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

***********************************
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
***********************************

HM: Borderlands 2
Song: The Heavy - Short Change Hero
Scene: Intro Cutscene
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZZR1WSYCMX8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/ZZR1WSYCMX8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

Why It Didn't Make The Cut: Because, just like the game itself, this great scene and song are both interrupted by a dumb plot involving Handsome Jack.

HM: Saints Row IV
Song: Stan Bush - The Touch
Scene: GRAND FINALE - BIG SPOILERS

Why It Didn't Make The Cut: Despite being the best reference to Transformers: The Movie I could ever hope for in a video game, I really didn't want two Saints Row games on this list.

HM: World Gone Sour
Song: Method Man - World Gone Sour (The Lost Kids)
Scene: Who cares?

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/tw7uhVtpI5I?hl=en_US&amp;amp;version=3&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/tw7uhVtpI5I?hl=en_US&amp;amp;version=3&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

Top 5 Original Songs
I'm limiting it to one song per game.

5. Super Meat Boy, Betus Blues
Composer: Danny Baranowsky
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/6Kf7ycHajX4?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/6Kf7ycHajX4?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3</a>

4. Lost Odyssey, Never Ending Journey
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/135Gltfkxeo?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/135Gltfkxeo?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3</a>

3. Bastion, Zia's Song
Composer: Darren Korb
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/t8cELTdtw6U?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/t8cELTdtw6U?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3</a>

2. Super Mario Galaxy, Gusty Garden Galaxy
Composer: Mahito Yokota
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/bcZhJDUFb58?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/bcZhJDUFb58?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

1. VVVVVV, Positive Force
Composer: Magnus "SoulEye" Pålsson
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/Tp3qiOKuEBM?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/Tp3qiOKuEBM?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

I chose Positive Force, but it could easily be any number of songs in the game. SoulEye's soundtrack is virtually unparalleled.

----

"Honourable" Mention?

Deadly Premonition, Life is Beautiful
Composers: Riyou Kinugasa, Takuya Kobayashi, Hiromi Mizutani
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/rzvXBFwcyek?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/rzvXBFwcyek?hl=en_GB&amp;amp;version=3</a>

I'm still working on my soundtracks list, which is currently locked in a 45 way Sophie's choice. Guess I'll take a break to get heartbroken by this Top 5 songs category instead.

Top 5 Original Songs.

Not counting previous generation games that got ported to 360/Wii (because then the list would be 5 songs from Bully Scholarship Edition). Each game franchise only gets one song (without this rule, it would be five Sonic songs...that's the next list). No items. Final Destination. Also, that joke doesn't mean that any Brawl songs made it.

5. Setting Sail, Coming Home from Bastion
Composed by Darren Korb
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/GDflVhOpS4E" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/GDflVhOpS4E</a>

4. Princess Amagi from Persona 4 Arena
Composed by Atsushi Kitajoh
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/BLvYVjZMPRo" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/BLvYVjZMPRo</a>

3. It's Kill or be Killed (Mix) from No More Heroes 2
Composed by Masafumi Takada & Taku Yoshioka
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ymRzDhZ4wiM" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/ymRzDhZ4wiM</a>

2. Hydrogen from Hotline Miami
Composed by M.O.O.N
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/qPjjUkpT3GE" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/qPjjUkpT3GE</a>

1. Aquarium Park - Act 1 from Sonic Colors
Composed by Tomoya Ohtani
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/1gZaH16gqgk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/1gZaH16gqgk</a>

Honorable Mention. This is old-ish and I'm very confused as to which generation it's in, but I'm gonna say it fits.

AKIRA- Statues from Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown
Composed by AM R&D 2 Sound Staff
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/CVF6vPA0w9A" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/CVF6vPA0w9A</a>

Top 5 Voice Performances
Again, one per game.

5. Steven Ogg as Trevor Phillips, Grand Theft Auto V
Ogg, who apparently recorded several lines while screaming in his underwear, gives an appropriately over-the-top performance as Los Santos' resident anarchic psychopath.

4. Merle Dandridge as Alyx Vance, Half Life 2: Episode Two
Alyx deals with some pretty rough stuff in Episode Two, and as always, Dandridge was spot on.

3. Armin Shimerman as Andrew Ryan, BioShock + BioShock 2
Shimerman shines as "the bloody king of Rapture" - and his performance brings Ryan to life as a tyrannical idealistic - as monstrous as he becomes, we never doubt that he's human, and that he really does believe in his city.

2. Logan Cunningham as Rucks, Bastion
Usually a performance is in service of a game, but one could argue that Bastion is in service of a performance - it's impossible to think of the game without recalling Cunningham's raspy, world-weary voiceover.

1. Stephen Merchant as Wheatley, Portal 2
It was a tough call picking just one role to highlight - J.K. Simmons is amazing as the progressively deranged Cave Johnson, and Ellen McLain's GlaDos voice is so ensconced in the public consciousness that it wound up in last summer's Pacific Rim. But Merchant shines as the dim-witted (and eventually megalomaniacal) Wheatley, giving us a rare voiceover that's both thoughtfully delivered and legitimately funny.
