Relevant Magazine Article

I found this in the Sept/Oct issue of Relevant magazine. It's an article primarily about JK Rowling, but then halfway through it mentions Homestar.

The title of the article is "When Good Creators Can't Move On" Here is the link to the article, even though you need a subscription to read the full thing:

If it was a band that got back together for a reunion tour, I don't think we would be that critical, but when it's a writer or cartoonist, somehow it's 'not moving on'? Whatev.

Hah, even band reunions are seen as a gathering of washed out has-beens, often...

When is Homestar Runner NOT needed? Homestar Runner on the Internet is an institution, and is as necessary as, say, Sesame Street on PBS, or a Zelda game at Nintendo, or Batman in the comics. And how is one supposed to gauge when a series like Homestar DOES or DOES NOT need more episodes? It's not like Harry Potter-- Harry Potter has a story arc, and aside from Cheat Commandos' Two-Part trope-smasher and the unforgettable DNA Evidence toon -- there's no PLOT, per se, and even with that said, these are always VERY isolated and separate adventures. Homestar isn't just one series, even. It's a gigantic multiverse of comedy that doesn't even have to rely on any specific characters in order to BE Homestar. In a lot of ways, it's a variety show that adapts to the subjects and concepts it wants to tackle. It's not a nostalgiafest of "Oh, I remember that! That was good, right?" If that were the case, then the April Fools cartoon wouldn't have even been on the radar and no one would've liked it simply because it didn't give them a Strong Bad E-mail. The repository The Brothers Chaps created was one that is always relevant because it's always been sharp commentary when it needed to be, deliciously surreal when it needed to be, and always fun and fresh. There's a reason they constantly killed computers and printers, constantly switched mediums, constantly did what no one knew they wanted!

Thank you very much for sharing. : D

EDIT: Geez, I'm pretty opinionated about this. If you are mad, perhaps this icon will do?

Yes, usually these things are about money. I would submit that JK is quite financially stable and doesn't need to do this for the money. I don't think TBC are reviving the site as a money grab either. If this is how they choose to express themselves, that's their thing. Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes then revived the character years later to the delight of fans. Was he criticized for not doing something "new"?

Anyway, it wasn't too harsh of an article and I like the magazine regardless.

Also, I don't think TBC ever "finished" H*R, did they?

It's one thing if you have some sort of 'final toon' with the website and then bring it back, but when you've never really officially concluded things...

That's a good point as well. It's like making a new Peanuts cartoon or something. Cartoons can go away and come back and still be *ahem* Relevant.
