Apparently the Grey Cup was being aired on ESPN 2!
11.5 million people watched the game, or about 1/3rd of the Canadian population. It's the biggest sporting event of the year in Canada in terms of viewership, even bigger than the Stanley Cup Finals (most likely due to most years not featuring a Canadian team in the finals).
My beloved Roughriders (Grey Cup Champions) play in one of the smallest population pools for a professional football team in North America (about 1 million in the province), yet they are one of the most profitable sports teams in Canada and have one of the craziest and most dedicated fanbase in sports. If you live or have lived in this province, you are a Roughrider fan.
