British sources confirm previously rumoured details about Microsoft's new console

British sources have confirmed that the next generation Xbox is indeed called Xbox 360, that the logo is a simple, round nexus, and that the console itself has a concave design - and a platinum white finish.

Many rumours - some of them conflicting - have been circulating in the past months regarding Microsoft's next generation system, but speaking under conditions of strict anonymity, a British source who is privy to Microsoft's marketing documents for the console has now cleared up much of the speculation.

The name of Xbox's successor is Xbox 360, we can confirm, and the design of the machine is indeed a concave shape.

The machine can stand upright and hollows in at the middle, like it's "sucking in its cheeks," our source told us today. Previous rumours had put the console as light silver, although fresh information says the final design may be white. It's impossible to tell from the documents, our source explained - although the glimpse of the machine's controllers given on viral marketing website OurColony does suggest a platinum-white colour scheme for the hardware.

According to the source, the rumoured slot for the hard drive module - which was apparently at the top of the machine - is not obvious on the document, and the person was unable to clarify where the slot for discs is actually located.

One other aspect we've been unable to confirm is the rumoured customisation features on the box. It's been speculated that the emphasis on customisation which J Allard touted at the Game Developers Conference last month could extend to allowing users to change the "skin" of the console, but this feature was not mentioned by our source.

As for the logo of the console, it is described as a simple, round nexus with "Xbox 360" written inside it. Previous rumours had simply the numbers "360" in the disc. This branding tends to suggest that we can expect to see "360" appearing after many game names, as happened with the Nintendo 64.

Microsoft will show the console for the first time in a half-hour special on MTV on May 12, a week ahead of E3. The company's press conference, on Monday, May 16, will be the first viewing of the console to the trade en bloc.

Xbox 360 is expected to receive a global release in late 2005.

They went with the stupidest name, if you ask me.  Xbox isn't that great of a name to begin with, but c'mon, Xbox 360?  Xenon was much better....

I thought Nintendo 64 was a stupid name. 360? what is that suppose to stand for anyway? 64 at least standed for 64-bit. and it's on natural that 128 (current gen) would proceed to 256 or even 512. Not fruity 360.

Releasing the Xenon (and i shall forever call it a Xenon. Even if no one understands me) this early is just plain stupid. It is probably going to be equal to or more money than the PS3 and REV. and PS3 and REV are suppose to have better specs.

It could definately look worse, but it sounds like it's just going to be an Xbox with a new look. A lot of the same features.


I don't have an Xbox, nor do I really want one. And I think it's going to be the same for the Xbox 360.
I think it should be called Xboux, for all those European people out there.

This is very..... interesting. If I recall correctly, EGM interviewed a developer about the next-gen systems, and he said that from what he has seen, Sony's PS3 looks to be FAR superior (over Xenon) He didn't mention revolution.. Only time will tell... only time will tell.

I like the irony of that pic. It's called an x-BOX, not an X-Sphere or X-Ball...   actually, the whole "XBox 360°" has the same problem... boxes can't be 360°...


Anyways, I'm still undecided about it this new X-Box will be a sucess or not. I'm kinda leaning towards 'no'...

Microsoft has a thing for naming their systems with very dumb names... I remember seeing a show a few years before the X-Box was released, it was talking about how Microsoft was considering getting into the video game market... and back at that time, the proposed name of the system (which, I guess in a way thankfully became "X-Box") was "The Ultimate Videogame System."  Yes, that's what they actually thought of calling it, way back in the day.

If the Xbox 360 is gonna be the new Dreamcast, I won't be happy. I was even considering buying the next-gen Xbox, for a time. Looks like I'll have to wait for the Revolution. Now THAT's a name. Revolution screams cutting-edge video game console advances. Xbox 360 sounds like a retarded Snowboard trick. And don't get me started on PlayStation 3. Gag.

giggles i rather agree that it sounds like a snowboard trick. unless it comes out with a REALLY tricked out Halo 3, there's no way i'm getting this...this...ball that people are hooking into their TV's. i don't trust that thing as far as i can throw it. and if the original Xbox is any indication, that's not very far. so i don't trust it worth the poopsmith's shovel. or that microphone that H* puked on. and i was never gonna get it before i got a Revolution.
