Torino Winter Olympics '06
« on: February 11, 2006, 08:57:46 am »

It's official, the olympics have begun. The winter olympics that is. And this is a thread to post any of your predictions, any events your excited for, any stories your following, any medals your country won; practically anything Olympics related. I'm hoping that i will (or anyone else willing to) be able to post how the standings sit at the end of each day (remeber, that is Turin, Italy's time  Evil Grin).

Here is the official list of all the events and what days they are on.

I'm hoping that no one here will bashing any countries. Its okay to cheer on your country, just try not to attack any other countries in the mean time. If there is, i'll have to lock this.

Discuss.

And Remember: VANCOUVER 2010!!!

I'm excited to see what the US hockey team will do.  We seem to be all talk, no show when it comes to Olympic hockey recently, so it'll be interesting to see if we bust or not.

The skeleton, luge, and bobsled are my favorite events, so I'm looking foward to seeing those.  The US has had a fairly good bobsled team the past two Olympics, so I hope that trend can continue.

Let's just hope this turns out better than the summer Olympics thread Just a hint, the first page was about people talking about how much they hate it Wink

Anyway, this looks like it could be pretty exciting this year. Sean White, an american snowborder, looks extremly promising. If anyone has seeing any skiing, be sure to check out the awesome view of the Alps. They're amazing.

I loved the opening ceremonies last night.  Watching that Ferrari F-1 car burn out some donuts on the stage basically made my night, lol.  Also, I need those helmets the dudes on rollerblades had... you know what ones I'm talking about, the one that were shooting out flames galore.   Evil Grin

I'm going to guess you're referring to the luge event.  The bobsled and luge are my two top favorite events in the Winter Olympics.  I'm also a fan of the speed skating, and ski jump.

Yeah I'm still watching it.  They finish these things really fast over 80 miles an hour!  Think of hitting a wall at that speed.

Well, all of today's events are over and done with and the standings are here.

At the moment, Canada and the US is tied for 3rd (or 2nd, depending on how you count it: Golds or Total medals)...

Yeah, they're Norway, they've sort of got an upper edge on winter related sports, considering they're sort of in a snowy climate.

Yeah, they're Norway, they've sort of got an upper edge on winter related sports, considering they're sort of in a snowy climate.
And yet the US, which parts of the country doesn't even have winter, always finishes with a high medal count. Weird, eh?

I don't know about the US, but my country is going a little crazy on its expectations. Team Canada's saying that they are trying to win 25 medals, more than any other Canadian team has ever gotten. But i don't think that's possible, let alone resonable. If Canada does better than it's last winter games (17 medals and 4th place overall), then i'll be happy. But come 2010, they better do an awesome job. Because my goal is to go to those winter games.

The winter olymics have a level of difficulty that simply amazes me.  I look at sports like the biathelon and the nordic combine and I'm just shocked.  Oh and....curling rocks.  The winter olympics are just incredible to me.

As tough as those events are, I think the toughest would be Women's Hockey. That is, for any country other than Canada and the US. Both Teams are near unstoppable, with US outscoring their opponents 11-0 and Canada outscoring their opponents 28-0. And all that in only two games. Just....Wow. You gotta feel sorry for Italy though. Playing in front of their home crowd, having all their friends and family watching, only to be beaten 16-0 and outshot 66-5 by Canada.

The events for today are over and done with. Norway still leads the way with 7 medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze). The US is tied for second with three medals (2 gold and a silver). And Canada sits tied in third with two medals (1 gold and 1 bronze). For all the results, see the link I posted before.

And so ends the second day, but the Olympics have only begun. Some big events are on tomorrow, including the beginning of Curling and Men's Hockey.
