Karma

I am making this thread before anyone else does.

Let's discuss the karma feature that is available with this forum but isn't turned on.

I think enabling the karma feature would be a fun addition to our forum.  It was previously unused so as to avoid hurting anyone's feelings, but I really don't think anyone would take it too personally.  Hopefully everyone can be mature enough to not abuse it and be moderate with their applauding and smiting.  Smiley

I'll add to the convo, as well.  I'm going to add a poll, asking whether or not you'd be in favor of adding Karma, just to make it a bit easier to see the numbers of "yes/no."

I put no, because I am unsure of the consequences of activating Karma. Maybe start off as a trial. That way we can know if all will go well or not.

I think we should atleast try it out, if it doesn't work out we could always get rid of it.

People need to know if people think they're annoying, it'd just be helpful.

For those of you who have voted, but didn't post, I'd ask you to consider posting why you voted the way you did.  I'd love to get as many voices in on this as possible.  I will weigh in with my choice as well, but later on, so to not possibly effect other's votes/choices.

I'd like another option, a test, perhaps. I would vote yes either way, unless something large happens.

I voted for "yes" because I think that we are all pretty mature here and there aren't really any jerks who would abuse it.  I also agree with the test period that people have been talking about. Also even if you have like super low karma just remember that its all in fun and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Anyone who would make a big stink out of getting low karma deserves low karma. If you have low or mild karma, try cleaning up your act rather than ruining this interesting system for the rest of us.

I agree with Jjcd7's idea of the test run. Since that's not available as an option, I'll put "Yes" for now.

I said yes. I'm hoping that people are mature enough to realize that it's just some stupid thing on the internet, and they won't be too offended if someone smites them.

And, of course, karma adds to the many ways that we can annoy each other. I view it more as a joke than as "I really dislike you, so I'm smiting you."

But, I'd say try it out for a short while, first, just to make sure nothing crazy happens with it. Other places have the time frame at 1 exhalt/smite per hour, but I'm pretty sure that can be adjusted, if we need it to be.

"Smite" is semi-homestar related, because of Trogdor. Of course, the more obvious choice would be "Burninate." I don't know what exhalt/applaud could be re-named, though.

So, in conclusion, I think we should try it for a while. If it's causing problems, then take it down, but if everyone's fine with it, it just adds to the quality of the forum as a whole.

I completly agree.

That is probably the best argument for kharma.

Ok, time to weigh in.

I'm in full favor of testing it out.  There are some things we'd need to work out, like how often it can be done, but I'm for giving it a test run.  Give me some time to figure out what limits this test will have, and you'll most likely see a test run of it start tonight.

Now, here is how it looks like it can be set up.  There can be a limit as to how many 'votes' people can give in a day, based off of votes allowed per hour, and/or how many 'votes' can be given to a person, based off of how many posts they do in a day.

For example:

Person A can cast 4 total votes in a day, meaning he/she gets 1 vote every 6 hours.

Person B gave Person A a karma vote, Person A can't get anymore karma votes until he/she makes 10 more posts.

...At least that's how I'm interpreting the settings here on the forum software.

This Idea I like. But i can see members spaming to get those ten votes...

1 ever 24 hours (resets at 12:01 a.m. the next day) is my opinion.

I think you've got it wrong. The person who was last given karma can't get another karma until he/she makes 10 more posts. And if he/she spams to get more karma, then it will just be negative anyway.
