iTunes 7 < Dog Poop
« on: September 20, 2006, 11:32:29 am »

So, as many of us here did recently, I upgraded to iTunes 7.  At first, before actually using it to listen to any music, I was quite pleased.  It looked sleek, economical, and the "no pause when changing songs" seemed like a cool idea.  I was happy.

But then, I actually used the program.  If only playing music, and doing nothing else, everything was fine, and I was a satisfied user.  However, if I ever attempted to surf the web, or do basically anything in addition to playing music, I found that my songs would skip constantly, and sound like a scratchy old 45.  The first couple of times I noticed this, I figured there may have just been an issue with the software, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled the program a couple of times- but to no avail, the same scratchy sound would happen.

Prompted by this, I began to poke around, and noticed that I wasn't the only person having this issue.  Scores of other iTunes 7 users were encountering the same problems as I was.

I've always been a happy iTunes user, I've been using it for a few years now, and have never had any issues like this before.  Thus, all I wanted to do was "downgrade" back to my iTunes 6.  Thankfully, I have all the installers saved, so I figured I was just a few clicks away from enjoying clear sounding music again.  That was not the case, however.  Once the previous version of iTunes was installed on my computer, I found that the software could no longer read my iTunes Library, as it was formatted by the satanic iTunes 7 software.

Low and behold, I have figured out how to get around this.  So, for any of you who are sick of the crap for crap sound quality by iTunes 7, and would like to be able to go back to iTunes 6, just follow these steps, and you will be able to do so!

How to regress from iTunes 7 to iTunes 6.0.5

1. Make sure you have a copy of the iTunes 6.0.5 installer. If you no longer have one, download it here:
http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=11622&cat=1&platform=osx&method=sa/iTunesSetup.exe

2. Shut down iTunes 7 if it is running

3. Uninstall iTunes 7 via the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

4. Go to your iTunes MUSIC folder (usually C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes). You will see two files called "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library". These belong to iTunes 7, DELETE them.
NOTE: Take care not to confuse this with the iTunes INSTALLATION folder, which is usually C:\Program Files\iTunes.

5. You will also see a folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries". Look inside, there may be several copies depending upon your upgrade history with names like "iTunes Library 2006-09-12". Take the most recent one (the last one used by iTunes 6) and COPY it up to the folder C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. Now RENAME this file back to simply "iTunes Library".
NOTE: To copy a file in Windows, right-click the file and choose "Copy". Now go to the folder you wish to copy to, right-click in the empty folder space and choose "Paste".
NOTE: To rename a file in Windows, select the file and press F2. Now type the name you want and press ENTER.

After this is done, your iTunes MUSIC folder (C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes) should contain the following objects:
a) The file "iTunes Library" that you just copied there and renamed
b) The folder "Previous iTunes Libraries"
c) The folder "iTunes Music"

6. Now reinstall iTunes 6. All your playlists and ratings will appear as if nothing had happened. And, your Shuffle will work once more.

Another thing about this version, it doesn't work with mytunes!!

How can I keep all the songs I get on one computer to the other? As for the songs being disrupted, that's not happening to me. Maybe you need to upgrade your 5kb of RAM.

I may want to downgrade, but I sure like the no time between songs thing.

1. There are tons of other ways to transfer songs. Mytunes sucks.

a. What did that have to do with the rest of the post?
b. Can you back this claim up with evidence besides it can't play games and doesn't have a right click?

1. Like what? I'd like to know, please.

2. a. Notice the parenthesis? Those subordinate the heck out of anything.
b. You basically hit the nail on the head. Also, it's formatted weird.

Can't just one of my posts fly by without being questioned multiple times?

Ah, I see what you're talking about, P. When I started playing a game, it started skipping. Yeah, that's lame.

Gir's problem (one of them) is that 80% of the time when people say that macs suck, it's due to the facts that macs don't have as many games available (Bootcamp'd!), or that they don't have a right-click button (USB mouse or even ctrl+click'd!).

I said this in CGN, but see? iTunes 6 works just fine. No need for iTunes 7.

From browsing on the Apple forums, people can't really think of a real reason why the new iTunes is acting funky (at least not as of 10:30 AM on the 20th).  I saw threads where people were comparing sound cards, RAM sizes, and so on, and there weren't any common themes in terms of "All the people with the problems have ____ in common on their computers."

Some people don't have any issues, as Gunner and HHF are lucky enough to prove, but from what I saw on the Apple forums (and other internet resources in general), they're in the minority.

Since downgrading back to iTunes 6, I haven't had any of the issues I was having with iTunes 7.  No songs skipping, cracking, or just plain sounding bad- I can play games, surf the net, do anything, and it sounds normal again.

You don't have "sound enhancer" on by any chance, do you?
