Video Game Jeopardy: A Live Gaming-Knowledge Showdown of Epic Proportions

Are you well informed about gaming as a whole, both past and present?
Are you the kind of person who watches people on TV talk about games while shaking your head because you KNOW you know more then they do?
Are you someone who enjoys showing off their gaming knowledge in order to shame those around you?

If you've answered yes to those questions, then Video Game Jeopardy is for you.

I am currently putting together a version of the popular trivia game focused entirely on video gaming, to be hosted over AIM sometime in the future. And I'm looking to see if there is any interest among forumgoers in participating.

For those interested...

How it'll work

-There will be one game per night for what is, as of now, an undisclosed period of time. If there is a sizable interest, I will try to create games on a regular basis, but as of now, we'll see how things go

-The game will take place entirely on AIM in order to create a live atmosphere. That being said, don't bother applying if you're the kind of person who "brb"s a lot. Just like in real Jeopardy, the questions will always be flying at you, and the game isn't going to be pausing all the time. If you're interested in playing, be sure that you'll be able to devote a certain period of time to being actively involved in the game. I estimate that the games themselves will take around half an hour, but I could be off

-There will be three people per night playing the game. Games will tentatively take place at 8:00 PM EST on a given night. Depending on the reaction I get to this game, I will decide on how the winning system works (i.e. whether the winner goes on and keeps playing or whether there's some sort of championship game at the end)

-Don't worry, 24 fans. There won't be any games on Monday nights. (I have class then anyways, so...yeah)

-As in the real game, all answers must be in the form of a question, since all questions are in the form of an answer.

Example of a normal trivia question and answer:
Q. What popular plumber is distinguished by his red hat and overalls?
A. Mario

Example of a Jeopardy question:
Q. This popular plumber is distinguished by his red hat and overalls.
A. Who is Mario?

Yeah, you're going to have to answer in like, Who is, What is, etc.

-There will be no "buzzing in" like in the show. Rather, you will post your response directly into the chat as the questions come. The first person to correctly answer the question gets the points. Be warned though: if you buzz in with an incorrect answer, you will lose points. Additionally, you can only buzz in once per question.

-By participating in this game, you obviously agree to be respectful as per the rules of the bored. That means being a good sport who doesn't whine/complain/say that the question was unfair.

-For those unfamiliar with the game, there are three rounds to Jeopardy: Single Jeopardy is the first round. In Double Jeopardy, the point values are doubled and the questions are harder in difficulty. The last round, Final Jeopardy, gives contestants one final question, with players wagering with the points they have collected throughout the game

-Obviously, this is for fun and not for actual money. Obviously. What do you take me for?

-The questions in Video Game Jeopardy will cover a wide range of gaming subjects both new and old. I obviously can't say more than that, but you are advised to be well-versed in this subject before playing. Be warned that questions in the Double Jeopardy round can get pretty tough at times, so yeah, be forewarned.

Added Tips for 2008:

-This game is, in my opinion, a little harder than last year's games. It's kind of hard for me to gauge this, though. I might tweak the questions a little bit before game time, because many of last year's games were kind of one-sided.

-Questions will cover console gaming only, though I will mention if a title or series has PC roots if the information is relative. My experience in PC gaming is quite limited, and it would be kind of hypocritical for me to quiz others on information that I am not familiar with.

-Questions will span throughout gaming history and will try to focus on multiple companies, franchises, etc. Though, in response to some of the feedback I received last time, I am trying to focus a bit more on current games so as to decrease difficulty level.

-Knowing about the "world of gaming" (companies, popular franchises, important moments in gaming, etc.) is helpful.

The thing is not if I want to play, but when I can play. I have a very difficult semester this year (this weekend is going to be 8 differenet English poems/poetry studies/miscellaneous projects, a huge project in Java, a project in Bio and studying for three tests that are on Monday) and my free time is very limited. So you'll have to give me a heads up beforehand of when the games are. This may mean that I won't have a definite answer of whether I can be there or not until that day.

But if there is the rare day where I don't have homework up to my ears, count me in.

Alright, here's an update!

The game is still on for Tuesday at 8:00 PM EST. Here's how it's going to work:

I have received word from FIVE people. HUGE 2 the DORK, scoobysnacks, and The Sneak were the first three who got in touch with me, so you three have first dibs on the three positions.

I also heard from stinkomank and PokeHomsar. So it's going to go like this:

I will be on AIM at about 7:30 PM EST on Thursday. The game will start at 8:00 PM EST. If all three contestants show up at 8, the game starts as normal. If people don't show up, then stinkomank and/or PokeHomsar will fill in.

Just some reminders:

-If you're a contestant, BE SURE THAT YOU CAN STAY FOR THE WHOLE TIME!!!! The game will take at least half an hour probably, so if you have anything else to do that might involve you leaving the game early, DON'T PLAY.

-Some people have asked me if it would be possible to watch the game as an observer. This should be alright, as long as you don't SHOUT OUT THE ANSWERS or anything like that. If you're just watching, then watch.
