Well, if we are going to do this thing up right, we should find the old threads and figure out what awards we want to use. Many awards could be used again, but some may not be worth the trouble. Let's figure out what of the old awards we want to vote on, and if there are any new awards we'd like to give out.

A personal idea of mine for new awards would be Kings/Queens of the in da Basement section. Those four boards really seemed to bring out the best in our members, from the epic games hosted and won in SFGaS, to the detailed and hilarious videos that made their way to SCaA. Myriads of wonderful pictures, avatars, and banners overflowed from SoaA back in the day, and many blissful hours were spend pouring over fanfics and email threads.

My idea for the award would be for members to nominate/vote for the member who they thought embodied the section/board the best (I don't know if y'all would want to lump Bubs' Bookstand and Smells like...Email together or not.).

Anyway, maybe someone who isn't desperately needing a shower before going to dinner can post what awards were given last time. Looking forward to getting the ball rolling on this with y'all.

Well, I've retrieved the list of Forum Awards from the first contest, and there are some good ones in there. Let's take a look at them, shall we?

-Biggest Forum Moment of 2005

-Man of Many Words Award (Awarded to the member who seems to have the longest posts)

-Silence Is Golden Award (Awarded to the member who seems to have the shortest posts)

-Forum Techie Award (Awarded to the member who seems to always be talking about the latest and greatest technology)

-Official Forum Fanboy Award (Awarded to the member who is the biggest diehard fan of a video game system)

-Furthest Off Topic Topic (What topic was started in 2005 that was the most off-topic, way out there?)

-Fastest Fingers Award (Awarded to the member who always seems to be FIRST to respond to a new topic)

-Most Exciting Forum Game (What was the best forum game of 2005?)

-Smiley Award (Awarded to the member who seems to most often use smilies in their posts)

-Human Dictionary Award (Awarded to the member who seems to use the biggest words in their posts)

-Forum DJ Award (Awarded to the member who always seems to be doing something with music)

Alright, so this is a good place to start. The question is how do we narrow this list down to our favorites/how do we go about adding new categories. Some will obviously need to be updated, for instance Most Exciting Forum Game of 2005 would need to be changed to something more current, although I don't know if it would be better to make it Best of 07 or Best Since 05.

Any thoughts on how we could make some sort of poll to vote on what stays, what goes, and what gets added?

I think the list you've got there is a good place for this to be.  The only real question I have at this point is just as you said; was there enough activity in 2007 to warrant it's own awards?  I do like all of the categories so far.  It will just take a devoted mod/leader to keep changing the polls for nominees and then winners.

EDIT: I just thought of another possible award; Most Lurkiest?  Someone who you always see is online/active but doesn't actually post often?

The Lurkiest Sound like a pretty good idea, especially since you made up a word for it.

An idea occured to me as I was sifting through the old Awards threads. One of the questions discussed about the next iteration of the awards was whether past winners would be up for renomination. Instead of that, we could pay tribute to them by having the former winner of the award be the presenter this time around. For example, Teatime would present the Man of Many Words award to this years winner, and so on.

It will just take a devoted mod/leader to keep changing the polls for nominees and then winners.

Well, if y'all want me to, I could help spearhead this. I've got enough time in the mornings and late nights here to organize and delegate responsibilities. But I'm not dead set on doing it, so if anyone has another suggestion of who could do it, I'd be happy to just lend my help/ideas to them. I just think this is a good idea, and want somebody to put forth th effort to make it happen. If I need to be the one to do it, so be it. I'll try to start brainstorming for the implementation of the ideas we already have, and if y'all choose someone else, I can just pass them on. Also, I figure it'd be good to get Potthole/beth to okay all this before we go full steam ahead.

As for awards to go, I think the Smiley Award, Human Dictionary, and Forum DJ awards should go, and most likely Most Exciting Forum Game too, since Member Survivor is really the only consistently posted in game thread.

Now we just need to determine what new awards we should add in. So far the ideas are...

Most Lurkiest (This award goes to the poster who you always see is online but rarely posts anything. Like "The Local Lurker" back before he posted a lot, changed his name several (dozen) times, and became a Mod.)

Chieftain of So Cool an Animation* (Who has put the most into the Animation section, not just in amount, but quality, and encouraging others.)

Sultan of Super Fun Games-N-Such* (This award would go to whichever poster you feel embodies the spirit of the section. That could mean a player, a creator, or a fan.)

Czar of Skills of an Artist* (People have used SoaA to show off their artwork, to create banners and avatars for others, and to enjoy the work of their peers. Which member seems to personify this section?)

Baron of Bubs' Bookstand* (Writers and readers come together in BB to share juicy literary morsels. This award is for the chef or the diner who best describes the section.)

Smells Like...Email Emperor* (The email section is one of BHZ's most unique boards. This award would be for whoever y'all thought deserves...you get the idea...)

One think to discuss is whether these awards should only go from 2006-2007, or if they should reach further back, spanning the entirety of the forum. Also, please post some more ideas for awards! Thanks!

I think the Silence is Golden award is supposed to be akin to the Most Lurkiest concept. Not people who post short posts, but people who rarely post, but when they do, make their presence known. So we probably don't need both those awards.

Okay, so here's the plan. I'll be taking nominations for each of the categories, starting today. I'll leave a list of the final categories in this thread for reference. If you want to nominate someone/a thread/a section, please PM it to me. I'll keep a running total of who all has been nominated and how many times. I'll then post polls in The Popular Vote with the Top 5 nominees for y'all to vote on, and we can go from there.
