As I said about a month ago, the hard drive on my laptop died, causing my laptop to be sent in, only to come BACK and have a new hard drive installed due to confusion over the warranty. I finally got it back in last week and today got Norton installed in it. Problem is, I can't connect to Norton's website at Symantec.com, nor can I get to the section of Microsoft's website to download Windows Defender. Adding on to this, I have Norton installed but because I can't connect to the website, I can't verify the subscription that we bought back in July that's good for a year, meaning I'm stuck with the trial version AND I have no way of getting updates, again because I can't connect to Norton's website. Now, I downloaded and installed Spybot to try to find the spyware, because I'm sure that it's spyware giving me this trouble, but it hasn't solved anything. I can get to most websites, but anything for trying to download internet security or spyware removal programs and I can't connect to the website.
Anybody got any ideas?

Well, lets start at the beginning. First of all, NEVER use Nortan. It's the definition of spyware. Secondly, while Spybot is good, there are better ones out there for free. Give Ad-Aware a try, see if it picks up anything else. To be honest though, it sounds more like a virus than it does spyware. Try giving Trend Micro's HouseCall a try: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Norten, spyware? What makes you say that? I'll give your suggestions a try though.

Yes, and apparently it's actually Norton, despite me thinking it's Norten.
Also, if this is a virus, it's a really good one, as that site you suggested Jack doesn't even show up. It just says "Cannot be displayed."

Spyware shouldn't be causing you to not be able to access websites, which is why I believe it's a virus. You might just be better off reformatting your PC. As for why Norton is like spyware, it's because it has taken the path of AOL. It used to be good at one point, but has since become way to intrusive and doesn't do it's job. It hogs up way more resources than any useful program should, it's virus definitions are not as up to date as other virus scanners, and there are much better free options out there. Why pay for a virus scanner when you can get one that's better for free? Personally, I don't see how people get viruses anymore. I haven't had a virus in years and it's gotten to the point that I don't even bother installing a virus scanner as it's just wasted resources on my computer. Same goes for spyware.
