Apple just did one of the smartest things it has ever done; make an iPhone but take out that annoying phone feature.

At $299, I can definitely put this on my "Will buy once I have money" list (right next to a new computer and an xbox360).

I know I'll get a lot of "I WULD B BUT I ALREADYZ HAVEZ AN IPOD" so I'll ask:

Would anybody be interested if they didn't already have an iPod?

EDIT!: Somebody pointed out to me how ridiculously tiny this is (8G? HUH?), so maybe it is not as cool as I first thought. Although somebody may be able to hack this one, too, and get something crazy happening.

I've been searching for an mp3 player for a few months and I've seen several that are under $250, have more storage than this, and all of the same features.

I don't see how this is a reasonable deal at all.

It's a good idea, but yeah, 8 GB for $299 is quite expensive. The new nanos, however, are cool. $149 for 4 GB that plays video is a pretty good deal, and 8 GB for $199 isn't too bad, but I think the better deal is in the 4 GB. What's interesting to note is the iPhone has been cut in price, with the $499 4 GB eliminated altogether, and the 8 GB cut down from $599 to 399, which has upset those that waited in line for the iPhone.

Apple has a tendency to release their newest technologies with a major shortcoming in one area or another and then upgrade it after selling as many rip-offs as possible.  Right now, there is no sense at all in buying an iPod touch, but once the standard HD size increases I suppose it'll be nice.  I like the nanos and classics as well.

Have more storage and all of the same features? Including the WiFi/web browser, built-in music store and touch screen? No... there are probably media players out there that are cheaper and better than the iPod classic, but there's really nothing equal to the iPod touch on the market right now.

I guess I'm old-fashioned, but I don't really care about all the bells and whistles. I care about how much music it can hold, and for its price, the iPod Touch is not a good deal at all. But I'm sure it'll sell like crazy based on brand name alone.

The price cut for the iPod Classic is really good though. $250 for 80 GB is such a good deal that I'd buy an iPod if I didn't already own an mp3 player.

So at this point I would rather just get an iPhone. I will probably get a classic model, but the phone is better than the touch.

I think because one of the biggest new features of the iPhone (besides it being a phone of course) was that you touch the screen to pick the songs you want to play, and so the iPod Touch is basically an iPhone minus the phone feature, making it more likely for people (like me) that don't have AT&T for our cell phone service.

Wow, I actually love this new lineup. The new nanos are amazing, and the iPod Classic is hands-down the best value on the market. In fact, I might sell my 5G iPod to buy one of these.

But I think the iPod touch will get a lot of buyers. 8mm thin!! That's astonishing. However, I do agree that there should be a slight capacity increase. 16 GB isn't large enough for a lot of people. But the wireless features, in my opinion, make up for that. Now we just need a Starbucks...

I just meant because Shadow Lord seemed to have some kind of problem with the iPhone and the iPod upgrade being so close to each other.

Dude, EVERYTHING is getting smaller and smaller. Cell phones, portable video gaming machines, even consoles. PS1 and PS2 were originally bigger but then had smaller versions released, and the Wii is like 3 DVD covers thick.

I bet in about five years, someone will have swallowed their iPod by accident. That's how small it will be. Even smaller than it is now.
