Website programming help.
« on: October 31, 2007, 09:38:50 am »

Ok folks, I know jack about HTML, CSS, Flash, and anything else that might be used when designing a website.  As such, hopefully you can help.

I help write for a blog as some of you probably may know.  We are nearing completion of a redesign, and have one final thing we'd like to do, if possible, with the banner.  We have a handful of banner designs that we really like, and would like to be able to set it up so that a random banner will load and show each time the page is loaded.

For example, when I load the page this time, I see banner A.  When I load it up next time, I see banner B.  The next time, banner C.  So on, and so forth.

Is there any way to code this banner, that you guys know of, to have it do what we want?  My friend, who does all the coding for the blog, says he found a Flash code/program/whatever that would work, but it seems to only want to load up and show for people using Firefox.  When we tested it out on IE, nothing was showing.

Please help!

Know are you trying to make it random or have it show Banner A, B, C, A, B, C,... in successive repetition? Having it go through each one in order would be beyond me. The site would have to know how many times that certain IP has visited the site and the computer would have to store it. The only thing that comes to mind with that would be cookies, which I have no knowledge of using.

I only know basic HTML, Javascript, and Java, due to the lack of resources/classes my school has. It is possible to make it random using some simple Javascript, but how to do exactly..., well it's been two years ago since I've used the language. I know how to do it Java, but then you'd have to load a java console with every load up and it be another program that you would need to depend on the user having for it to actually work. Plus, it looks really ugly.

So yeah, I'm basically useless to you. Tongue

I remember reading somewhere that if you name a directory on your site "[something].gif" or "[something].jpg" and then put all the images into that folder, and when you're placing the banner on the site you write the name of the folder, which has a picture extension, and it cycles through them.

Or, I could be completely wrong.

Yeah, I could do it in Java for sure, but I don't know Javascript.

'Course, I could always ask a prof of mine. Actually, potthole, couldn't you just ask a prof from the computer science dept. at Cornerstone? I'm sure they'd know what to do.

Yeah, random is what we'd want... I just happened to describe it in a non-random manner.

I don't know any of our computer profs, but that's a good idea.  My friend thinks he might have found something that'll do the trick.  Over the weekend I'll design some more banners and we're going to test it out.  Hopefully it works, because we'd like to take the new layout live soon.

Just posting to let you guys know that it looks like we got it figured out.  Thanks to you who offered any ideas, no matter how useful or not they were.

We took our redesign live today, here's a link, in case you're interested in checking it out:
