HDTVs

Now that my B-Day came here in Cali, dad got me a very good-quality HDTV. It's an 37-inch LCD by Vizio. Even though I don't have HDMI cables for the Wii or the DVD player, the fact that it has widescreen capabilities is still awesome enough. Plus, I have a fairly satisfying amount of HD channels, even though I don't have an HD receiver. The picture quality is very good: even though the store claims that it is 720p, it plays 1080p channels very well. It was about 700 bucks, which is pretty cheap for what you would get. Has anyone else had great luck with any widescreen TVs?

Well, where to start.
For one thing, there is no HDMI cables for Wii. That would imply that Wii could go beyond 480i (composite cables). Also, unless you have an HD reciever, I highly doubt you are actually getting channels in the HD format. Rather, they are being upscaled from their original 480p output to work on your tv. And I don't believe there are any channels that exclusively display in 1080p. I'm sure there are channels that would output in 1080p, but they would also work on every other resolution through scaling and whatnot. And Vizio... never even heard of them.
As for my luck with HD's, I haven't had much as. I researched for months on which kind and which specific model would work best with our current set-up: A large viewing angle, no chance of burn-in, multiple HDMI and Composite inputs, and, of course, what would be the best for gaming. I settled on a 52" Samsung DLP, as my mom was getting impatient with my decision. DLP is probably the best for gaming when it comes to contrast ratios, burn-in protection, viewing angle, and overall picture quality. But the thing is, DLP's have a slight delay in their picture. This problem has been fixed in nearly every DLP out there. Except for Samsungs. Which means that games like Guitar Hero, R-type, or even Shadow Hearts: Covenant are completely impossible to play. This is supposedly fixed when playing a PS3 or 360 with an HDMI cable, but that really doesn't help me with my Wii and PS2.

Yes, our Samsung has the exact same problem, and Guitar Hero 2's calibration tool does not work as advertised. It took me a very long time to realize why I was performing so poorly at SMB and Starfox 64, however.

I have a friend with an HDTV, but it causes lag when we play melee so we all hate him.

I kept the last one too long, but didn't have a good replacement.
